Populate MySQL from CSV

A simple thing - populating MySQL automatically from CSV using MySQL utilities turned out to be quite a challenge. The fix was surprisingly simple

5. Sometimes you might want to add an extra hard drive volume which might be a physical or virtual volume and point the MySQL instance to read and write to this extended volume. On Ubuntu 12.04 there are a few steps to be followed which are not very clearly defined unless on trawls a few blogs. Luckily I found a blog which collates all this information in one place:

Mediawiki setup

Today I installed mediawiki - this is an amazing piece of software using PHP and MySQL that is great for documentation of software projects.

I followed the links here:

But I really found this to be more useful:

There was a broken link for getting the tar ball for mediawiki. Besides that, there was one step missing - to create a user called wikiuser in MySQL. Other than that, it worked fine.

Etherpad setup

Today I set up a Collaboration tool called Etherpad. I just love it. It is like a google docs application, except that it is a notepad-only application. There are no fancy Wordprocessors or Spreadsheets.

This was not easy or straight-forward. I had to read many blogs and visit many websites to do it right.

1. Download the binaries from http://etherpad.org/#download
Most of the commands here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Etherpad-liteInstallation to create etherpad user and installing packages from aptitude are relevant:
apt-get install gzip git curl python libssl-dev pkg-config build-essential

The "Tweak the settings" section is very relevant

Log rotation might need double quotes around the filename otherwise logrotate utility errors out.

1. Download the binaries for nodejs from http://nodejs.org/download/ and install from it. I installed it to /var/www with permissions 777.

2.If you face problems like the following:

4. Generally the following commands can start and stop etherpad if the above steps are followed
